Still not received much news about Playa Macenas, between Carboneras and Mojacar, except that there are a lot of Par 3 holes, and the people are very friendly. Good discounts for Society members, and for all players in the afternoons. Phone number is 950 47 28 42.  Website www.playamacenas.com gives a hole-by-hole description, but I think this is of how it will be rather than how it is.

This map shows the courses that are about one hour’s drive from San Jose.  The Alboran course, built for the 2005 Mediterranean Games, is the closest.  Click on each name to go directly to the website of the course.  Below the map is a summary of each course, with discounts offered, contact details and our own comments.

NB – No golf courses allow metal spikes and some may ask for Handicap Certificate.

Green fees shown are just a guide and may vary without notice. Check at the time of booking to be absolutely sure and remember to say that you are from the San José Golf Society and request the discount. Your membership card must be shown when checking in.  All travel times shown are estimates.

Some of the comments below have been made by friends, and are their own opinions.  We reproduce them below to try to help with personal recommendations/warnings. More recent comments and opinions would be very gratefully received.

Comments: This course is still very new and does not have a proper clubhouse.  However, there is a small office with changing rooms, a great outdoor bar with a good range of tapas, and the people are very welcoming. There is also a practice area with a driving range, €1 for 20 balls.

Special deals for the over 60’s on Tuesdays - €20 I think.

There are some great competition on some weekends, all welcome but official handicap certificate required.

Comments: A new course which looks like it might become one of our favourites. The setting is quite magnificent, and although there is some building still going on, the scenery is stunning with the background of mountains. It is very quiet at the moment, and JJ (the director) is offering us some great deals to go and play there. It has a small clubhouse with changing facilities and a cafeteria.  The course looks very challenging, and you will need a buggy if only to carry the large amount of extra balls you will need ....  first reports say that it is too challenging a course for many players.

Comments: Upgrading to 18 holes, so some changes to the course while the upgrade is completed. An update would be appreciated from anyone who has played there recently. Gareth Edwards, the professional, is very helpful and now has a fully-stocked shop. Unfortunately, not enough members have been playing there so we have lost our Society discount, but it’s still very good value at 27 euros. Nevertheless, go and give it a try - it’s a lovely course, improving all the time, with spectacular views.  Regular Wednesday and Sunday competitions.

Comments: Lovely course, quite hilly so a buggy is recommended.  Delightful people in the pro shop, very welcoming. There is still a lot of construction going on in the complex.   With a bit of notice, they can arrange a full English breakfast before you play, if there are enough takers.  Robert, the manager, is extremely helpful.
